In the United States there are a number of restricted firearms and other devices regulated by the National Firearms Act (NFA). These weapons are known as Title II or Class 3 firearms and are sold only by FFL dealers that have a Class 3 Special Occupational Tax permit.

The Special Occupational Tax is imposed on those who require dealing with firearms under various business propositions. There are 3 Special Occupational Tax divisions, including: Class 1 for those who import NFA firearms, Class 2 for manufacturers and dealers of NFA firearms, and Class 3 for dealers of NFA weapons.

What Are Class 3 Firearms?

Those in Class 3 must possess a FFL of 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11 types. Here is a list of the weapons that can be classified under the category of Class 3:

Œ‡ Machineguns

Œ‡ Short-Barreled Rifles (SBRs)

Œ‡ Short-Barreled Shotguns (SBSs)

Œ‡ Suppressors

Œ‡ Any Other Weapon (AOWs)

Œ‡ Destructive Devices

How To Obtain Class 3 Firearms

These weapons are available for dealing and supplying purposes for people who have a FFL and the required documents. Once the license has been obtained the holder can gain access to the weapons and ammunition approved by the NFA.

Devices regulated by the NFA have authorization to be used in every state in the United States of America. All Class 3 dealers are given a common license under the NFA äóñ they do not require a separate Class 3 license.

To obtain the FFL under the NFA, one must complete all the formalities and levy the Special Occupational Tax. The ATF Form 7 is an application provided by the FFL for people interested in dealing or supplying firearms and ammunition. The form requires personal information and details regarding the usage of weapons that will be allowed.

The FFL department requires the completion of the ATF Form 5330.20, which includes the certification of the applicant as a United States citizen. The department requires fingerprints of the person attempting to obtain the license, two photographs, and authentication from two people who will take on the responsibility of identifying the applicant. This will be followed by an interview of the applicant with an officer from the federal department. Then, the license can be obtained within 5 to 10 days.

Purchasing Class 3 Firearms Online

People looking to buy Class 3 firearms online must go through a licensed FFL dealer who has the item or can accept the transfer for the NFA device. After arranging the purchase or transfer with a licensed dealer, it is necessary to get approval for the transfer from the ATF (submit the ATF Form 4).

Get Approval From The ATF

The cost to process the transfer is $200 and the applicant must submit identifying information. Approval for the item comes back as a äóÖtax stampäó» and once the ATF approves the transfer the buyer can complete the transaction with their NFA dealer.
